Chapter Tournament on Merwin Reservoir. 16 contestants

I'd like to thank each and everyone of you that participated in the Merwin Res Chapter 57 musky tourney this past weekend. It was a success but we knew it would be didn't we. The weather held true as I always order it that way when I apply for the permit, LOL. Gorgeous country surrounds this canyon resevoir and the beautiful weather made it look even more gorgeous. Lone Fir Resort proved to be a great place to stay for this event. The management were super friendly and accomodating. I'll definitely be going back.
Now for the tourney results:
Lots of fish sighted.
Many more followed and some even nipped. A few short strikes and a couple that just plain ol came unbuttoned.
Mike Haw registered a nice healthy 33"er for honorable mention.
Rich Dilling registered a 38"er taking 3rd place.
Ken Miller checked in a 38"x17" for 2nd place.
Remember, a girth measurement breaks a tie.
Mark Wells registered a 32 1/4" x 14" early in the day and a 43 1/2" x 19" with only 20 minutes left for 1st place and taking the double option pot. The dbl option had money in it left from the previous tourney since no one doubled, it carries over to the next tourney.
Next is the Mayfield Open and I sincerely hope that everyone of you can make it.
See ya on the water.
Sincerely,
Mark Wells
Vice President/Tournament Director

Jack and Jill Tournament on Mayfield.

Afternoon folks. It's been a busy week to say the least especially when you spend the entire weekend musky fishin.
I'd like to congratulate the 5 couples that participated in Chapter 57's very first Jack & Jill musky tournament. You made it a great success and another ground breaking achievement for NW Tiger Pac.
Mother Nature provided excellent sunbathing weather as she does for all Chapter 57's musky tourneys. It was a beautiful 85° but you could jump in any time you wanted. Two muskies were measured and released successfully. First place honors went to Ken and Tonia Miller with a healthy 42.5"x20"er that Ken said he'd never have landed if it weren't for Tonia's netting skills. Lori and I got to be the judges on this one. My beautiful wife Lori showed her seasoned net girl skills again as Team Wells put a 40"x18" in the net in the final hour. Perry and Jani were the judges for our fish. Lori even managed this under the most extreme wakeboard boat conditions as two of them decided to come by at arms length right at the critical moment. I know they were just testing Lori but I knew she had it under control.
A special thanx goes to Josh Kline for his hospitality. He provided his house at Mayfield Lk for the awards and meal afterwards. Fantastic time Josh. Also, thanx for putting up with Lori and I the entire weekend.
If you folks missed this one, to bad as it won't happen this way again untill next summer. Pictures are coming to the web site ASAP.
Sincerely,
Mark Wells
Vice President/Tournament Director

Chapter Tournament on Lake Tapps

Congrats to a couple of top notch musky fishermen. Our membership chairman,(Todd Reis) took top honors Saturday with an eleventh hour fish that measured 40". Our president,(Perry Peterson) grabbed second place early in the morning with a fat healthy 35"er. This is Perry's 999th musky but his first WA tiger in a tourney. We had 23 participants in 13 boats. Great turnout guys. We even had quite a few southwest WA members that found their way to Tapps. As you could see, we've outgrown the park area for awards afterwards. This is why we had it at our house. Thanx for all that came up for the pot luck. The camaraderie afterward sure puts the icing on the cake.
Sincerely,
Mark Wells

Combo Muskie/Bass Fish-in on Lake Tapps

From Mark Wells, Co-Chairman of the Event (along with Larry Sullivan; Director of Western Bass Club):
Larry,
It was an honor to fish with someone of your caliber today. I hope it's not the last time we wet a line together.
Everyone else, It was a great time. I hope everyone had as much fun as I did. Always good to get fishermen together. It doesn't matter what we fish for, we're still all fishermen.

Chapter Tournament on Curlew Lake

Well folks, here's the results of a fantastic weekend:
First off I'd like to say thanx to all that attended the first musky tourney of 2008. If you found an excuse not to go, sorry. You missed a great weekend of fishing a beautiful musky lake under warm, sunny skies and calm conditions with a great crowd. Another thanx to all that participated in the pot-luck supper after the tourney. Great time to BS, make new friends, rekindle old ones and just plain ol 'have fun'. It don't get no better than this.

I also want to sincerely thank Randy Osborne and Bill Baker of the WDFW for attending our event as judges. They were radio tracking some muskies this past week in Curlew so while there, they wanted to scan any caught fish for tags or transmitters but volunteered to witness the measuring process at the same time. Thanx a lot guys. Fantastic job. Mike Wilkinsin of the WDFW also participated in our contestants meeting to inform us of the dangers of invasive weeds and zebra mussels. Thanx Mike.

First place: Frank Haw with a nice healthy 45.5"er. Talk about new member luck. Frank joined at the tourney then proceeded to show us his expertise. Congrats Frank.

Second place: Todd Reis measured a fat 34"er. Todd's fish had a WDFW tag in it. This fish was 4 years old and healthy. Todd's our membership chairman and a well deserved winner. Congrats Todd.

Third place was simply an honorable mention: Tom Schafenacker successfully landed not only his first musky but also his biggest (it was huge) in a cradle but decided it was better released before the judge boat arrived. Congrats on your PB Tom.
Jill, practice some with that cradle for the next one. LOL

This tourney was hosted out of Fisherman's Cove Resort. The owners (Jack and Sandy Beck) are great folks and run a great resort. First class all the way. Thanx Jack and Sandy for everything. Can't wait till next year.
Thanx again and hope to see everyone at the next event.

Chapter Meeting at Round Table Pizza in Federal Way.

ANNUAL AWARDS CEREMONY: Lots of Awards; lots of Surprises!

Feb. 21, 2008. What a great meeting, lots of fun and surprises and good folks. We kept the business to a minimum for this, our first Awards Ceremony.

First off, 16 folks received a certificate and heavy metal "Catch & Release" pin for volunteering at the Chapter 57 Booth @ the Puyallup Sportsman Show. (For the few who were not present, you can pick up your pin at the March meeting!)

Next came Sportsman of the Year, presented by Chairman Bill Green. This Award is for the member who participates in at least 75% of club events, represents us as a family club, respects other anglers, regardless of how they feel about CPR and who "leads by example".

The 2007 Sportsman of the Year Award went to Member Jani Kuper. Congratulations, Jani!

Angler of the Year was presented by Mark Wells, Chairman. This award is given to the angler who has tallied the most inches in muskies (over 30 inches) caught and released.

2007 Angler of the Year winner was Michael Floyd with a total of 583 inches! Congratulations, Michael!

The longest was 46 inches and he had a grand total of 14 tiger muskies!! Even more impressive: this was Michael's FIRST YEAR targeting tiger muskies! Looks like he will be the angler to catch in 2008 and his son says he will be giving chase! Congratulations, Michael, they are not easy to catch and 14 is quite a feat!

Last event of the evening was speaker Jack Tipping, WDFW, retired. Or at least he thought he was going to speak. 5 minutes into his presentation, Jack was interrupted by a very loud FedEx courier who "claimed" he had an important document for a Mr. Jack Tipping from a Mr. Doug Fletcher from Weippe, Idaho (Jack's former boss and mentor when he stocked the first tiger, 20 years ago in Mayfield Lake.) After presenting his ID (!) Courier Rick instructed Jack to read the document to the Chapter members. It was a surprise letter and a great, funny, moving tribute to the Father of Tiger Muskies in WA.

But the surprise did not end there; Perry Peterson, President, presented Jack with a plaque honoring all his dedication to the project along with a framed, beautiful, underwater photo of a tiger in the weeds and sunlight.

A generous, anonymous donor has also purchased Jack a 10 year membership in Muskies Inc.!

And last but not least, Jani played a video the Chapter put together (with the help of Jack's wife, Sharon, who was in on the surprise) complete with archived photos and some great pictures of Jack and some of his big fish. But mostly it includes our gratitude and appreciation. Want to see it again? It's on YouTube.

January 23 - 27, 2008
We had an informational booth at the Washington Sportsmen's Show at the Puyallup Fairgrounds. It was a great chance to meet lots of new people and to catch up with old friends. There are some pictures in the photo section.

They also put up a free supper for all contestants and judges Sat evening over a fantastic picture show by Bruce Bolding showing all of us fishing through out the day followed by dessert and a great tiger musky presentation by Bruce also. Jack Tipping (father of WA tiger muskies and tourney angler) also shared some valuable info on tiger muskies.

LAKE TAPPS MUSKIE TOURNAMENT!
NW TIGER PAC Chapter members only.
100% Catch and Release
$10 per person entry.

Cash prize for biggest Muskie, went to Mike F. Way to Go, Mike!

A great day for all that participated. 15 anglers in 8 boats measured 3 muskies. A couple shakers and follows were also had by some. The post frontal conditions made for a tougher day than expected but fish were caught despite the weather.
Mike F won the event with his nice 44"er, I managed a skinny 40"er in a figure 8 and last but not least was a fest 31"er released by KUP. This was KUP's first musky and there was some serious excitement there. I think I heard the hollering all the way across the lake. Pics will be posted on the NW Tiger Pac website soon.
A big thank you goes out to Denny (Co Park Manager) for opening up a little early and for allowing us to use their equipment garage and adjacent parking for the awards ceremony and raffle afterwards. I'd also like to thank him for opening up the gate early for us fishermen all summer.

August 16
Chapter Meeting at Sportsman's Warehouse in Federal Way. Speakers were:
Mr. Jack Tipping from WDFW and Onalaska fame. He was the first man to stock a tiger muskie in Washington waters back in 1988. It was a great story.
Also Mr. Don W. gave us a presentation on his successful tips for bucktail lures. He even showed us his favorite bucktail lure!
Free NW TIGER PAC T-Shirts were awarded to the 5 youngest anglers present.

July 28, 2007
Mayfield Lake, Members Only Tournament.
Thanks to everyone that participated and thanks to everyone that helped out. It was a great '1st' event. 8 fisherpersons in 4 boats with 4 muskies caught and released alive to be enjoyed by someone another day. I managed the smallest fish of the day - 38.25". Bad Esox did a very quick release of a beauty about 40". Jon started us off in the morning with a fat 42"er but Miles came through with the win on a beautiful 43"er on his Mayfield Lake secret bait. Cash prize for the largest fish plus some of Charlie's leaders in the raffle brought a great day to an end. Hope to see all of you and more at the Lake Tapps event in Aug. Remember, its members only, so come to the next meeting and join us! Mark W.
