Someone recently asked Mark Wells for advice on choosing the right line weight for Muskie fishing in the Northwest. His emailed response was worthy of posting here:

I used 50# Power Pro a couple years back without any problems at all but re-tied often. Even throughout the day. I tried 65# and it casted better plus it's added diameter didn't allow it to dig into the rest of the line on the spool when jerked out of the weeds etc. I switched to 80# on my jerk/glider rod/reel just because of the abuse it gets throwing the heavier baits. It also didn't dig into the spool when casting gliders like the lighter stuff does. I re-tie after a good fish or after getting a hard snag out but otherwise I'm good for all day on a good knot in the morning. Also, the heavier lines 'flow' off the spool a lot better since they lay over each other better. Palomar Knot. It's never broken on me. Mono backing so the super line doesn't slip around the spool plus you only need to put 100 - 150 yds on a reel. Buy a 300 yd spool and it'll do 2 reels. I've got PP on 2 reels and Stren on 2. Both are good.
